March 6, 2011. Here in Paradise - that is, Southern California - irrigation is absolutely necessary. Joe Walsh once said, "Nothing grows/And life ain't very pretty." I don't know if the Eagles guitarist was talking about Riverside, but he could have been. This is the desert, friends. But everything can be like the Garden of Eden with the steady, daily (automated!) application of water.

I learned from the barrel garden that bubbler sprinklers and regular ones intended for watering lawns were insufficient. Against the advice of others, I made my own watering system, a combination of drip and sprinklers. I raised 1/2 inch PVC about a foot off the ground, and drilled tiny holes through about every foot or so.
